Travel Tuesday no.23 // Sapporo

Having visited several cities in Japan already, I wanted to go somewhere different so I convinced my family that we should head to northern Japan. It was my first time visiting Sapporo, the capital of the Hokkaido Prefecture, (though my dad and brother had been here before) and I fell in love with the laidback vibe of this city. Since we would be there in October, I was especially excited to experience autumn in Sapporo because I heard Hokkaido's fall foliage was beautiful.

Left: departing Narita International Airport. Right: Arriving at New Chitose Airport.
We were very fortunate that we were headed north, not south because over three hundred flights were cancelled the day we left Tokyo due to a super typhoon warning (Typhoon Vongfong - the strongest to hit Japan in 2014).  It was a smooth plane ride and we arrived in Sapporo with no incident.

I love New Chitose Airport. One of the things I was looking forward to was the food in Hokkaido - dairy products, seafood, confectioneries and more! These are some snapshots I took at the airport. Fresh Calbee chips with Hokkaido ice cream (sounds like an odd combination but so good), Siretoco animal donuts, Kinotoya cheese tarts (one of my favorite treats), and crab. Yes, they have fresh crab at the airport!

Our first stop was the top of the Sapporo TV tower for an incredible view of the city and Odori Park down below.

Our second day in Sapporo was the typhoon day, though it did not affect Sapporo much aside from some rain. We decided to head to Shiroi Koibito Park, which was a theme park and chocolate factory created by a local Japanese confectionery company. Touring the factory was quite interesting and they had several (random) rooms and exhibitions of antiques on display. We ate at their cafe and had a perfect table by the window which gave us a beautiful view of the courtyard below. Delicious desserts and pretty autumn scenes? Yes, please.

We went to Sapporo Beer Hall at night for dinner and couldn't resist trying the Caramel & Pudding Frappuccino at Starbucks afterwards. As you can tell, we did lots of eating on this trip. So worth it.
The barista's drawing of a pudding was so cute! //Side story: We had purchased a Hokkaido mug and tumbler at Starbucks and the people working there were really friendly, giving us coffee samples and attempting to make conversation with us with their limited English. It was a little moment but a sweet memory :) That's also why the barista wrote 'thank you' on our drink!

Again, I didn't have much time to go shopping stationery but I did stop by a few local places I spotted here and there. I think the longest time I had was at Loft for 30 minutes. Planner/washi tape/stationery heaven.

More food photos, just because. Otoro is the best.

Being in Sapporo, I knew I wanted to visit a park and see the fall foliage. We spent an hour or so at Nakajima Park on one of our days, enjoying the peace and quiet as we admired the autumn colors and wandered around the area. The nice thing was that the park wasn't too large so it was easy to make our way through it.

The former Hokkaido Government Building was so picturesque! I'm glad we stopped by on our last morning in Sapporo.

We had an amazing time in Sapporo. I had a hard time narrowing down my photos and I only showed a fraction of all the delicious things we ate ;) I just wished our trip was longer so that we could have had enough time to visit other parts of Hokkaido. Next time.  I know I definitely want to return one day!

Happy Tuesday everyone!
